Indi Near Bijapur


Indi is a town and the Taluk head quarters of Indi taluk in the district of Bijapur. It belongs to the Belgaum division. Indi is situated at the border of Maharashtra. It is located 53 km towards North from district head quarters Bijapur and 584 km from the state capital Bangalore towards South. The taluk Indi is bounded by Sindagi Taluk towards east, Afzalpur Taluk towards west, Bijapur Taluk towards south, and Akkalkot Taluk towards north. Sindgi City, Bijapur City, Sholapur City and Mangalvedhe City are the main cities near this place.

Local language of Indi is Kannada; people may also speak English too. Indi is very hot in summer. In summer the highest day temperature in Indi is between 35 degree C to 43 degree C. The soil of this place is mainly dry therefore agriculture was mostly dependent on rainfall. But now, most of the agricultural land is being brought under irrigation with the construction of the Upper Krishna project. The Krishna River flows through Indi Taluk Bhima, it originates at Bhimashankar Hills in Maharashtra.

Places to visit in Indi

There is a Shree Marulsiddheshwar temple in Indi, located in the heart of the city with a Shiva linga. The Gramadevata of Tadavalga in Indi Taluk is Shree Marulsiddheshwar. In this temple the worship is done at three times a day. A big celebration and a sravana month are done every year in this temple. The Shiva linga is decorated with several kilograms of wet rice and the specialty is that not a single rice grain falls down. There is another temple similar to Shree Marulsiddheshwar temple In Indi located at the central part of the city with ashi linga. The temple is dedicated to lord Shanteshwara the deity of Indi.

Apart from these temples, there is an old venkateshwara temple in Indi which has a beautiful deity idol and a temple Ambabhavani located near to Shanteshwara temple. There is a village by name Lachyan located at a distance of ten kilometers from Indi. According to legend there is a saint lived in this place known as Siddalinga maharaja. He performed many miracles and there has many followers at present.
About three kilometers from Indi town there is a place called Hire Indi believed to be older than Indi. People say that once this place was plagued by diseases, so the new town of Indi was formed. There is a very old hanuman temple backed by a huge farmland maintained by the agriculture department. Now it is a picnic spot for the primary school students in Indi.

How to Reach Indi

Bijapur is about 60 kilometers from Indi and there are many bus services from Bijapur to Indi. Other major town near Indi is the Sholapur in the neighboring state of Maharashtra located approximately 70 kilometers from Indi. The nearby railway station to Indi is the Chorgi Rail Way Station situated about 6 km from the town. Sholapur Jn Rail Way Station, Ibrahimpur Rail Way Station, Bijapur Rail Way Station, Indi Road Rail Way Station are the Rail way stations reachable from nearby towns and  has train called Basava express that connects it to Bangalore. Bijapur Fast Passenger connects Indi to Mumbai.
